Audit volunteers paid home visits to elderly residents of Lei Cheng Uk Estate
On the morning of 15 March 2025 (Saturday), a team of over 10 volunteers, including staff of the Audit Commission (Audit) and their family members, paid home visits to some elderly residents of Lei Cheng Uk Estate. During the service, the volunteers met and chatted with singleton and doubleton elderly and gave them gift bags.
Before heading to the homes, the volunteers of Audit attended a briefing session at the Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Shamshuipo) on things to note during the visits. For some of the volunteers, it had never occurred to them that there was quite a lot to pay attention to when visiting elderly. Techniques in communicating with them, work to be done before and after the visits, etc., were all important in making the support service an enjoyable and unpressurised experience for the elderly. Putting the newly acquired techniques into practice, the volunteers found it satisfying and meaningful to be able to bring joy to the senior residents and gain new experience themselves in this voluntary activity.
Prof. Nelson Lam, Director of Audit, also took part in the visits. He remarked that in this age of fast development, many senior members of the society could get easy access to information from different media channels through technology. Those living by themselves, however, could have a hard time finding someone to talk to. Prof. Lam thanked his colleagues at Audit for contributing their leisure time to take part in these home visits and serving as listeners to give care and warmth to the elderly. Listening and chatting might seem to be effortless tasks for us, yet being present and showing care would mean a lot to them. Prof. Lam encouraged Audit staff members to continue to reach out to the community and get to know more about people’s everyday lives, which would echo the Audit’s vision of providing people-based services.
